Did his arguments with Gene Siskel and their popularizing of the thumbs up/thumbs down approach to criticism compromise serious film discourse? This issue is secondary to the extraordinary life portrayed in Steve James’ brilliant documentary Life Itself, based on Ebert’s memoir of the same title.
